  • Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures to include venipuncture, techniques using standard equipment to include vaccutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes and butterfly needles
  • Enters alphabetic, numeric, or symbolic data from patient requisitions, face sheets, or photocopy of patients' insurance card, into the information system following format displayed on screen
  • May enter:
    • client information (group name, referring physician, address, and phone and fax number) patient's demographics (patient name, address, phone number, date of birth, social security number, gender, medical record number, and electronic medical record number)
    • clinical history (past/present medical conditions, specifics of medical diagnosis or tests, treatment plans, family history, type of service, services received, dates of service, and provider of service)
    • specimen description (size, shape, and type of specimen) billing type (client, patient, insurance, no charge)
    • patient insurance information
    • Assembles equipment such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified tests or procedures
    • Confers with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears and elicit cooperation
    • Utilizes standard procedures for the maintenance of positive patient identification and records appropriate collection information on proper requisitions.
    • Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag
    • Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing; Properly disposes of contaminated sharps
    • Prepares, processes, labels and stores patient specimens and samples according to departmental procedures using standard techniques and equipment, for subsequent analysis by laboratory testing personnel
    • Cleans work area following safety, cleanliness and infection control procedures
    • Maintains inventory of supplies; reorder as required; stock supplies on carts and hand trays; Maintains strictest confidentiality
    • Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations, company/departmental rules, polices and procedures
    • Preforms other duties as assignedMinimum Qualifications:
      • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed as required in some states
      • Minimum of 1 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast paced lab or hospital setting
      • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
      • High School Diploma or GED
